Remove Excess Gum Tissue for a More Balanced Smile
It is not uncommon for patients to feel self-conscious about a gummy smile, as excess tissue can cause even straight teeth to appear uneven. To create a more symmetrical gum line, Dr. Conrad C. Casler, Jr. can carefully reshape the gums during a gum contouring procedure. Gum contouring is an excellent standalone treatment. However, it can also be incorporated into a personalized smile makeover plan for even more dramatic results. At Casler Dental Group in Tulsa, OK, we treat our patients like family. We will do everything we can to help you achieve a smile you are proud to show off.
Is Gum Contouring the Right Solution for You?
If you feel that your smile appears disproportionate or asymmetrical, you may be a candidate for gum contouring. This treatment may also be beneficial for patients who are planning to receive a dental crown or porcelain veneers. As a cosmetic procedure, gum reshaping is recommended for patients with otherwise healthy teeth and gums. Underlying issues such as gum disease or tooth decay must be addressed before treatment. During your consultation, Dr. Casler can evaluate your oral health to ensure you are a candidate.
As a patient-focused practice, we always make your concerns and desires a priority. We encourage you to share your expectations for treatment and ask any questions you may have about the process. We will do our best to ensure you feel comfortable in our care.
The Treatment Process
To begin, we will administer a local anesthetic to numb the treatment area. While anesthetic is sufficient for most patients, you may also elect to receive sedation if you are especially nervous.
Gum contouring is an excellent standalone treatment. However, it can also be incorporated into a personalized smile makeover plan for even more dramatic results.
Dr. Casler will then gently remove excess gum tissue to expose more of the underlying tooth. This process requires careful planning and an eye for detail. Dr. Casler will move slowly from tooth to tooth to ensure each area is expertly contoured.
After Crown Lengthening
After treatment, it is common to experience mild irritation, swelling, and sensitivity. Any discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. Recovery typically lasts about seven to 10 days.
To avoid disrupting the treated area while it is healing, you should consume a soft food diet for the first few days. Refrain from eating spicy foods or those with seeds, as they can become trapped underneath the gums. You should also exercise caution when brushing and flossing your teeth and be extra gentle around the surgical site. A saline rinse can also help to keep the area free of debris.
